In Key West, much of the history you have a chance to learn about and experience is from long ago. The Mel Fisher story, told in full at this fascinating destination, is much, much more recent.
This fascinating museum tells the story of treasure hunter Mel Fisher's search for, and eventual discovery of the wreck of Spanish galleon the Nuestra Señora de Atocha in 1985.
The Atocha sank in 1622 and Mel searched for 16 years to find her. It's an inspiring story of a family still dedicated to treasure hunting, even now that Mel passed away in 1998.
This is definitely one of my favorite history stops. You should see it.
